At Freiburg ( then also French zone ) Rocard protected the solar observatory and founded a French navy-owned ionospheric prediction service with Karl Rawer as scientific director.

It was de-commissioned in 1984 to make way for the Australia Telescope and transferred to the Ionospheric Prediction Service, where it is still used today for space weather monitoring of solar activity.

Beginning in the late 1970s, the town began hosting U . S . Air Force personnel assigned to Learmonth Solar Observatory, a defence science facility jointly operated with Australia's Ionospheric Prediction Service.

The RSTN is complemented in its real-time capability by a radio telescope operated from 25 MHz ( the ionospheric cutoff ) to 1, 800 MHz by the Ionospheric Prediction Service at the Paul Wild Observatory in Culgoora, New South Wales, Australia.
